My First Job: I have good memories of the Fisher Housing Project (on the S.W. side of Detroit). When I was 12-years-old, I had a job after school working at Johnson’s Store. And, Ben was a good role model. Mr. Johnson paid me 50 cents per hour and I worked from 6 pm to 10 pm Monday thru Friday and 8 hours on Saturday. Like clockwork, every week I rode my old bike to the bank where I diligently put my pay in my savings account. My bike was old and I really would have liked a new one but I didn't have the will to spend my hard-earned money. It took me a while, but I finally saved $435.00 and instead of buying a new bike, I was able to put it to better use later on. I still have my cancelled bankbook as a reminder of my first job.
